- 100% USDA ORGANIC AND IT ACTUALLY MATTERS HERE: Dried leaves can retain whatever was present on them during cultivation, including pesticide residues. Our Tej Patta leaves are 100% USDA Certified Organic and grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. The certification provides a verified standard for how the leaves are grown.
- THIRD-PARTY LAB TESTED, EVERY BATCH: Every batch is independently tested by a third-party laboratory for heavy metals, ETOs, and pesticide residues. Original laboratory reports are available through Spice Profile, so you can see the testing behind the product rather than simply taking a quality claim at face value.
- NOT MEDITERRANEAN BAY LEAF, KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: Indian Bay Leaf, also called Tej Patta, comes from Cinnamomum tamala, a tree in the cinnamon family. It has a warm, gently spiced aroma with notes reminiscent of cinnamon and clove, which is different from the sharper, more herbal character of Mediterranean bay leaf. If your recipe calls for Tej Patta, these are the leaves you are looking for.
- WHOLE, LONG & INTACT LEAVES: Our Tej Patta leaves are selected for their size and appearance, with whole and mostly unbroken leaves that are easy to add to a pot and remove before serving. They are not crumbled pieces or ground powder, giving you the whole leaf and its natural aromatic character.
- FROM THE HIMALAYAN FOOTHILLS OF INDIA: Tej Patta is traditionally associated with the Himalayan foothills and cooler regions of India. Our leaves are sourced from growers in India and selected for their quality, appearance, and characteristic aroma. Their warm flavor makes them useful in both traditional Indian recipes and other slow-cooked dishes.
- HOW TO USE IN EVERYDAY COOKING: Start with 1 to 3 leaves for a family-sized dish. Add them to hot ghee or oil at the beginning of cooking and allow them to release their aroma before adding other ingredients. Tej Patta is commonly used in biryani, pulao, curries, dals, korma, and slow-cooked gravies, and it also works well in soups, bean stews, braised dishes, and tomato-based sauces. Remove the leaves before serving.
- RESEALABLE POUCH TO HELP PRESERVE AROMA: Much of a bay leaf's aroma comes from its natural oils, so proper storage matters after opening. The resealable pouch helps protect the leaves from repeated exposure to air and light. Reseal after each use and store in a cool, dry pantry. The leaves are also non-GMO, gluten-free, and suitable for vegan cooking.
